Trauma-Informed Therapy for Emotional Overwhelm

You cry more than you want to. Or you don’t cry at all and feel totally numb.
You react to things bigger than you mean to—or you freeze and shut down completely.

If your emotions feel overwhelming, unpredictable, or hard to control, you’re not broken.
You might just be living with unprocessed trauma or emotional neglect that no one ever taught you how to recognize.

At Awakening Mountains, we offer trauma-informed therapy for emotional overwhelm to teens and adults across New York and Vermont who are ready to stop fighting their emotions—and start understanding them.

What Emotional Overwhelm Might Look Like:

  •  You feel easily triggered but don’t always know why
  • Your reactions don’t feel “proportional”—and you’re hard on yourself for it
  • You feel flooded, numb, checked out, or shut down often
  • You’re constantly “on guard” or waiting for something to go wrong
  • You swing between hyper-independence and complete burnout
  • You were called “too sensitive” or “dramatic” as a kid
  • You struggle to identify or name your emotions at all

This is what happens when the nervous system is trying to protect you—but it never got the chance to fully reset.

What Is Trauma-Informed Therapy, Really?

It’s not about reliving the worst things that happened to you.

It’s about gently understanding how those things shaped your body, your brain, and your beliefs.

Many of our clients don’t even realize they’ve experienced trauma—because it doesn’t always look like a big, dramatic event.
It looks like:

  • Constant emotional invalidation (“you’re fine” or “don’t be so dramatic”)
  • Walking on eggshells in relationships
  • Being the emotional caretaker in your family
  • Feeling like you always had to hold it together, even when no one else did

These experiences create invisible trauma—and therapy gives us the tools to start healing it.

How We Support You Through Emotional Overwhelm

 Our work together may include:

  • Nervous system education (why your brain/body respond the way they do)
  • Mindfulness and somatic practices to help you feel more grounded and safe
  • Naming and validating emotions without judgment
  • Identifying emotional flashbacks or dissociation
  • Building emotional regulation tools and real-world coping strategies
  • Learning to trust yourself, your body, and your boundaries again

Who This Therapy Is For

  •  Adults & teens with a history of emotional neglect or chronic invalidation
  • People who feel “too much” or “not enough” in their relationships
  • High-functioning individuals who hide their emotional pain behind productivity
  • First-time therapy seekers who want gentle, non-clinical, human support
  • Anyone trying to heal from invisible trauma and reclaim their emotional space

What Sessions Might Feel Like

This is a space where emotional intensity isn’t something to fix—it’s something to understand.

You’ll be met with warmth, pacing, and deep attunement to your experience.

Some days we might talk. Other days we might breathe. Some sessions might include grounding, somatic work, or compassionate reprocessing of past pain.

You’ll never be forced to go “deeper” than you’re ready for.
You get to lead—and I’ll walk with you.

You Deserve to Feel Safe in Your Own Body Again

Emotional overwhelm doesn’t mean you’re weak.
It means your system is asking for care, regulation, and support.
